Should I move to Self-Hosting?

I am hoping to get some advice/input from you blogger friends! Crystal from Budgeting in the Fun Stuff suggested I move to self-hosted Wordpress if I want to make a little money with advertising. I was hoping that those of you who have already done so would be able to answer a few questions. Basically I am just wondering if you did all the work yourself, or if you paid someone to do it for you? And if so how much did it cost? Who do you use for hosting? Basically any advice you guys can give me is appreciated.
